Robert R. Taira, the Hawaii-born son of Japanese immigrants, opened his first bakeshop, Robert's Bakery. This is where the first soft round loaves of the Original Hawaiian Sweet bread were made. According to locals, the loaves rarely made it home before they were devoured.
With his tireless efforts and commitment to delivering an irresistible product, Robert had created a traditional island favorite.
Robert’s Aloha spirit of sharing with family and friends was the cornerstone for Irresistibility and set the tone for the future of the company.
With this commitment and spirit the locally loved original shop moved to King Street in Honolulu and became King’s Bakery.
King's Bakery was a local favorite, but word of the Taira family's deliciously irresistible breads and cakes had spread far and wide. Our original Hawaiian Sweet Bread was being shipped, by locals and tourists alike, to our family and friends on the mainland and around the world.
An entrepreneur at heart, Robert was determined to spread his Aloha Spirit throughout the mainland. In 1977 a new 24,000 square foot bakery was built in Torrance, California with the name we all know today… King’s Hawaiian Bakery!
As the word about the King’s Hawaiian brand was spreading fast, the brand continued to grow exponentially. Working diligently to keep up with the demand and looking forward to an amazing future, King’s Hawaiian set their sights on a calculated investment that would change the trajectory of the company.
In 2003, King’s Hawaiian completed Haborgate, the 125,000 square foot, world class baking facility to accompany our Bakery in Torrance. This investment would allow the brand to grow in a meaningful way and spread our Aloha to grocery stores across the entire country.
In 2006, the team established a disciplined, strategic planning process for King’s Hawaiian and one that would establish a foundation for the future IFG. While King’s Hawaiian had a strategy in place to date, this new strategic planning process focused on answering and aligning on a very long-term “end game”, an end game that would last for the next 50 years. The outcome of the process was a new mission statement, company values, vision statement, and strategic imperatives. Since the creation of the Strategic Plan 1.0, King’s Hawaiian has grown over 10x and is still committed to only putting resources (time, talent, and capital) towards efforts that achieve the end game. It is this strategic planning process that IFG leads all new brands that join the family of brands.
After 70 years of committing to delivering irresistible Hawaiian foods and aloha spirit, King’s Hawaiian became one of the most beloved brands in America.
A 100% family-owned company, Irresistible Foods Group was established to help high potential brands with strategic planning, functional expertise and support, and financial resources.
As we have with King's Hawaiian for more than 70 years, IFG is committed to authentically stewarding irresistible brands into the future, and as founder-friendly investors or acquirers, we aim to create value for our brands by providing capital allocation and strategic guidance. Unlike other investors and acquirers, we have no plans to sell our companies.
There are pickles, and then there are Grillo’s Pickles!

As a part of IFG's ‘Ohana, they are continuing to redefine the pickle category! Keeping their roots in mind, they continue to demonstrate that freshness is what drives their success.
